I was born in the Midwest at the midpoint of the century to conservative parents that had an educated, tolerant view of the world. Brought up rurally but with a small amount of traveling received an education that was fairly eclectic. They wondered when I would come to my senses and get a real job. I never did. Photography started to become a passion, and a career, when in 1973 I was drafted into the Navy. I shot print ads and television commercials for the military for four years before going to The Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. After graduating in 1980 and opening my first studio, I worked and worked to make a living never knowing there was a whole other world of photography waiting for me. Colorized Black and White large prints became my first venture into the fine art genre. Soon after that, I discovered Lenticulars when I was teaching Photoshop up in San Francisco and images of natural elements became my passion.
“May you live in interesting times …”
Finding joy, beauty and a sense of peace in our world today can be a tremendous challenge.
I graduated in 1980 from The Art Center College of Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography and spent the next 35 years as a commercial photographer. I worked in my studios in Los Angeles, New York City and finally Vermont. Recently I retired and searched for a way to rediscover creativity and the excitement that comes with it.
Living in Vermont presents the opportunity to walk outside and be in the woods, on a mountain, out on a lake or in a stream. Sharing this with others is a wonderful combination of circumstance, time and place.
I have been exploring flower pressing and botanical collage, combining the sublime beauty of nature and a technical process I know well. I use a method of shooting the pressed flowers to create an image similar to X-ray photography. The flowers are found mostly in the wild. The detail that this process is able to produce is stunning.
I hope you enjoy these photographs as much as I enjoyed making them!
